Lufthansa Aviation Training (LAT), the global flight academy of Lufthansa, adopted mixed reality (MR) technology with Varjo and Brunner to modernize pilot training by delivering immersive, scalable training modules using real cockpits and MR headsets.
Traditional aircraft training depends on limited flight hours and simulators, which are costly, weather-dependent, and often lack flexibility for consistent scheduling. Access and availability of instructors and planes constrain the volume of pilot training.
LAT deployed a mixed reality simulator built around Brunner’s NovaSim MR DA42 cockpit platform and Varjo’s XR‑4 Focal Edition headset. Trainees operate real cockpit controls while the headset delivers a 360° virtual environment at human‑eye resolution, combining physical interaction with digital visuals. Integrated eye tracking enables data-driven insights into trainee attention and decision-making.
More training time: Trainees can access the simulators all year round, even in adverse weather conditions.
Cost-effective and sustainable: Simulator hours are much cheaper than aircraft hours and reduce carbon emissions.
Enhanced realism: Real cockpit controls with immersive, full-field visuals.
Performance tracking: Eye tracking lets instructors see exactly where pilots are looking during critical procedures.
EASA-certified innovation: First EASA-approved RM simulator for pilot training.
